The Doughnut Club

Donor-conceived Quinn loves her two mums and brother Olly but often feels like the odd one out since she’s the only one with red hair and green eyes and would rather quietly draw than participate in her family’s favorite outdoor activities like surfing. When her mums reveal that she and Olly have sixteen donor siblings, Quinn becomes excited about the possibility of finding someone more like her and secretly searches for information about them only to complicate matters when she suspects her worst enemy, the snobbish Monika, might actually be one of her siblings.

What’s Done Well

  • Authentic curiosity. Quinn’s curiosity around who her genetic siblings may be leads her to secretly going on the website her mums used, and even uses her mums’ debit card without permission to be able to message her genetic relatives. This curiosity and the journey this takes Quinn on is something that many donor-conceived people may find relatable.
  • Diversity of donor conceived experiences. This book includes the points of view of youth who knew from a young age that they were donor conceived as well as youth who found out later in life. By including these two perspectives, this book offers multiple entry points for donor-conceived people to see themselves.
