I’m Going to Go Back There Someday

I’m Going to Go Back There Someday is a full-length road-trip comedy that follows Garry, a 26-year-old bisexual Jewish man whose father has recently died, as he travels to meet his sperm donor for the first time. He is accompanied by his teenage sister Rachel, his girlfriend Joni, and his ex-boyfriend-turned-best-friend Mohammed, each carrying their own relationship to loss. Running alongside the road trip is a graphic novel Mohammed is writing, which comes alive onstage: Pinocchio, the biblical Jonah, and a Kipling mariner, each stranded inside a whale, each modeling a different way of carrying something unresolvable.

The playwright, Asher de Forest, is donor conceived.

Review

What This Work Does Well

  • Garry isn’t searching for a replacement father or a missing identity. He’s reaching toward something harder to name, and that ambiguity is a real experience for many DCP.

  • The donor-conception storyline doesn’t resolve into a tidy answer. The meeting the play builds toward turns out to be a small part of a much larger narrative, which aligns with the experience of many donor-conceived people: significant, but not the whole story.

  • By weaving donor conception into a play that is also about grief and relationships, the work normalizes it as one thread of a full life rather than a defining wound.
