Devil and the Bluebird

Blue has gone hitchhiking across the country to find her older sister, Cass, who went missing two years ago. To get help finding her, Blue meets the devil at the town crossroads, and in exchange for her voice, the devil imbues Blue’s hiking boots with magic, making them act as a homing device that directs Blue where to go. Blue just has to make sure that the people she meets on her journey never learn her real name, or they will be targeted and killed. As Blue gets closer and closer to her sister, she meets a variety of characters, some kind and helpful, and some that threaten Blue’s life. The further Blue goes, the more she realizes that she is following the path her deceased mother took out west that led her mother to her bandmate and life partner, Tish, whom Blue has not seen in years.

What’s Done Well

  • Donor conception is a fact of life. Donor conception does not play a large role in this book. Instead, it is simply a facet of Blue’s identity, as it can be for donor-conceived youth.
